How to Sell a Differential Fluid Service (Without Sounding Pushy)
Differential fluid (gear oil) lubricates the gears that send power to the wheels. A service drains the old, metal-laden oil and refills with fresh.
Why it matters to the customer
Gear oil shears and picks up metal over time; running it too long chews up gears and bearings — a rebuild far pricier than the fluid. Trucks, towing, and AWD vehicles need it most.
Signs it's due
- Whining or howling from the axle
- Fluid is dark with a metallic sheen
- Heavy towing/off-road use
- Past the interval
When to recommend it
Every 30,000–60,000 miles, sooner for towing/off-road.
How to present it on the drive
Lead with usage — trucks and tow rigs are the easy yes. Bundle with a transmission service since you're already under the vehicle.
Handling the "no"
"That's a thing?"
It is — it's the oil in your axle, and it's often forgotten until it howls. Especially with the towing you do, fresh gear oil is cheap next to a differential rebuild.
A ready-to-send customer text
Hi [name] — since we're already under your [vehicle] for the transmission service, the differential fluid is due too and yours is dark. Knocking both out together saves you a second trip. Want me to include it?
